Was fab to attend yesterday’s launch of Civic Power Fund’s brilliant new ‘Funding Justice’ report: https://lnkd.in/embfQgGALots of really powerful analysis of just how little grant funding in the UK is spent on social justice, and poses vital questions about how effectively it’s directed. A few snippets:- 5.7% of UK foundation giving in 2021/22 went towards work to tackle injustice. - 0.3% of UK foundation giving in 2021/22 went towards building people power through organising. -Nearly a third of social justice grants in the UK went towards service delivery. This work delivers much needed care to communities, but it does not go further in agitating for systemic change. - Another 37% went to ‘inside game’ work in elite settings. This is work aimed at decision-makers, but it often excludes the very communities both facing injustice and fighting to end it. - By contrast, less than 10% of social justice funding is going towards ‘outside game’ activities that excluded communities rely on to be heard.

In our city, many nonprofits in town provide services to fight generations of financial disparity and discrimination led by Redlining. In this government-endorsed practice, maps color-coded neighborhoods based on race, effectively dictating who could access housing loans. Communities marked in red, predominantly non-white neighborhoods, were deemed "risky" for lenders. With this in mind, Texas A&M University-San Antonio approached us last year with the idea of creating a short documentary about the history of redlining in our city. Our 6-month project led us through the heartbeats and backstreets of San Antonio, unearthing stories of resilience, displacement, and transformation. It became more than just a film; it was a profound journey of appreciation for the indomitable spirit of this city's residents. Dive into this narrative and join us as we unpack the lasting impact of redlining on our community and, most importantly, the unwavering hope for a brighter, more inclusive future. Watch now; link in bio.
