Two-way traffic to resume on Colonial Parkway at the I-64 overpasses by Friday, Jan. 15

YORK COUNTY—Starting Friday, Jan. 15, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) I-64 Widening Segment III Project are scheduled to reopen the year-long, single-lane consecutive closure on Colonial Parkway at the I-64 overpass bridges. Removal of the long-term closure will allow two-way traffic to resume on Colonial Parkway, with traffic no longer being alternated in each direction using a temporary traffic signal.

Temporary, intermittent stoppages are anticipated to take place between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, to adjust traffic barriers in preparation for reopening the two-way traffic configuration. Occasional overnight closures under flagger control on Colonial Parkway will take place as needed as the remaining bridgework is completed.

As part of the I-64 Widening Segment III project, crews used this closure to rehabilitate and widen the I-64 bridges over Colonial Parkway while also working to match and maintain the existing historic aesthetics seen along the Parkway. The lane closure allowed for the safe removal of a portion of existing brickwork and construction of the new custom brickwork and bridge arches on the I-64 overpass bridge over and directly adjacent to the Parkway.

Motorists are reminded to continue to obey the reduced 25 mph work zone speed limit on Colonial Parkway and to drive with caution when traveling in the project work zone, especially when navigating the upcoming new traffic pattern.

SERIES OF TRAFFIC SHIFTS TO BEGIN ON THIRD SEGMENT OF PENINSULA I-64 WIDENING PROJECT

Motorists advised to stay alert to new traffic patterns on I-64 east as early as April 14

YORK COUNTY – As construction continues to progress on the third segment of the Interstate 64 Widening Project, a series of traffic shifts are scheduled to begin, moving traffic left from the two existing concrete travel lanes onto the new travel lanes in the former median to allow for the full reconstruction of the outside lanes.

Starting as early as overnight Tuesday, April 14, the first scheduled traffic shift will take place eastbound on I-64, starting from east of Route 143/Capitol Landing Road (exit 238) and transitioning back to the existing outside lanes before the Lakeshead Drive overpass bridges, weather permitting.

Once the shift is complete, motorists will begin using the two inside travel lanes, as well as traveling across a newly constructed bridge over Queens Creek. During this traffic configuration, this new bridge over Queens Creek will temporarily carry eastbound traffic, as the demolition and reconstruction of the eastbound bridge is underway. Ultimately, this new section of bridge will become the westbound bridge over Queens Creek at project completion.

To complete the traffic shift operations, crews will alternate single-lane closures on I-64 east between Route 143 and Colonial Parkway, April 13-14 from 7 p.m. until as late as 7 a.m., as well as implement a brief stoppage overnight to transition the traffic safely to the new lanes.

The next traffic shift is currently estimated to take place as early as the week of April 20, which will shift eastbound traffic to the inside lanes on I-64 from Colonial Parkway to the eastern limits of the project near Route 199/Humelsine Parkway (exit 242).

While lower traffic volumes have been observed overall in Hampton Roads recently, motorists are reminded that they must still obey the reduced 55 mph speed limit and drive with caution when traveling in the project work zone, especially when navigating the upcoming new traffic patterns.

COLONIAL PARKWAY REDUCED TO SINGLE LANE DURING I-64 BRIDGE REHABILITATION AND WIDENING WORK

The long-term, consecutive lane closure to begin as early as mid-morning Jan.15

YORK COUNTY—Starting as early as after morning rush hour on Wednesday, Jan. 15, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) I-64 Widening Segment III Project are scheduled to begin the installation of a temporary traffic signal and consecutive lane closure on Colonial Parkway at the I-64 overpass bridges. The long-term closure will reduce Colonial Parkway to one lane, with traffic being alternated in each direction using a traffic signal. Temporary, intermittent stoppages are also anticipated to take place between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15 to install temporary concrete barriers to complete the new single-lane configuration.

As part of the I-64 Widening Segment III project, project crews will be rehabilitating and widening the I-64 bridges over Colonial Parkway while also working tomatch and maintain the existing historic aestheticsseen along the Parkway. The lane closure will allow for the safe removal of a portion of existing brickwork and construction of the new brickwork and bridge arches on the I-64 overpass bridge over and directly adjacent to the Parkway.

The lane closure is estimated to be in place for approximately one year. During this time, the speed limit has been reduced to 25 mph through the work zone on Colonial Parkway.

All project work and scheduled closures are dependent upon weather conditions.
