History

Hoek van Holland has an eventful history. The village started to grow with the construction of the Nieuwe Waterweg canal at the end of the nineteenth century. The Fort was also built then to protect the Maas estuary. ‘De Hoek’ was developed as a seaside resort after being annexed to Rotterdam in 1914. Hoek van Holland had a hard time during the Second World War; the bombardment of Rotterdam also hit the village, and the ‘Oude Hoek’ was demolished to make way for the Atlantic Wall bunkers.
