To what I understand, if a number has no decimal point, then you cannot determine its number of significant figures because it is ambiguous. If this is so, why did this question determine that the 6 has one significant figure and therefore the answer can only have one significant figure? Wouldn't the 6 be ambiguous, and the 7.0 (2 s.f.) determine the number of sig. figs that the answer needs to contain?
A Review | Constants 1 Periodic Table Part A Evaluate 6 x 0.222 x 7.0 and round the answer appropriately. Express your answer numerically using the appropriate number of significant figures. View Available Hint(s) Hint 1. How to approach the problem Hint 2. Calculate the unrounded answer Hint 3. Determine the number of significant figures in the answer Based on the factors given in 6 x 0.222 x 7.0, to how many significant figures should the final answer be rounded? Express your answer numerically as an integer. View Available Hint(s) 1 significant figure(s) Submit Previous Answers Correct Submit Previous Answers Correct In multiplication or division, the result carries the same number of significant figures, s.f., as the factor with the fewest significant figures. In this case, 6 X 0.222 X 7.0 = 9.324 = 9 (1 s.f.) (3 s. f.) (2 s. f.) (unrounded) (1 s. f.) The intermediate result (9.324) is rounded to one significant figure to reflect the least precisely known number (6), which has one significant figure.
