Description
ASA BLANCHARD, LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY RETAILED, WILLIAM HOPETOWN, ENGLISH GEORGIAN STERLING SILVER PAIR CASED KEY-WIND POCKET WATCH, chain fuse movement with verge escapement, fully engraved movement plate with pierced balance co*ck and silvered regulator, having a 45.5 mm white enamel dial with Roman chapter ring and blued-steel spade hands, housed in a sterling inner open-face case with high dome bull's eye crystal, sterling outer case with plain design, interior lined with a printed retailer's paper that reads, "A. BLANCHARD / Clock & Watch / Maker / Lexington / KENTUCKY / Gold & Silver work." and reverse with handwritten date of "Octr 17th 1832" in ink. Key included. Movement signed "Wm Hopetown / 2913 / LONDON", interior of each case impressedwith "J [or T?] C" maker's mark under a hammer or axe, probably for Joseph Carpenter, and three hallmarks of a lion passant for sterling fineness, a crowned leopard's head city mark for London, and an "F" date mark for 1801, retailer's label for Asa Blanchard [Blansett/Blancett] of Lexington, KY (active 1806-1838), who also worked in Dumfries, VA (active 1789-1806). Total weight including movement, crystal, ribbon, and key: 128.1 grams. Early 19th century, retailed later. Outer case 56.0 mm D. Provenance: From an Ohio collection.

Condition
Very good overall condition with minor wear, surface scratches including some being heavier on outer case, dial with a few minute hairlines along edges at III position, minute hand with significant bending; retailer's label with discoloration, some creases and short tears along edges. Currently running, but not timed for accuracy (see Catalogue Guarantee).
