whale tale

There is no better place to watch the migration of grey and killer whales than the West Coast of Vancouver Island.

The whales move from their breeding grounds off the Mexican Coast to their feeding grounds in Alaska.
Migrating whales pass through each spring and fall, with a high number of resident pods.

Orcas are distinctively marked black and white dolphins that exist in British Columbia as three distinct populations: residents, transients and offshore's.
Each population has major differences in behavior and organization; differences such as dorsal fins.
Resident pods specialize in hunting salmon, at least during summer and fall. They usually have 3 to 10 individuals.
Transients are opportunists, preying on harbor seals, sea lions, elephant seals, other whales, and sea-birds. Unlike residents, they may leave their mothers group while still very young.
Offshore whales are not very well know. We think they travel in groups of 30 to 60 individuals, probably following schools of fish.
